Durmitor National Park

Durmitor National Park is the epicentre of Montenegro's wild, mountainous beauty. A designated UNESCO World Heritage site, this vast protected area is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. The park is a dramatic landscape of soaring limestone peaks, including Bobotov Kuk, the highest in Montenegro, vast plateaus, and dense pine forests. It is most famous for two spectacular natural features: the Tara River Canyon, which is the deepest canyon in Europe, and its 18 stunning glacial lakes, poetically known as "gorske oči" or "mountain eyes." The largest and most accessible of these is the magnificent Black Lake (Crno Jezero), a dark, tranquil body of water ringed by ancient forests and set against the backdrop of the imposing Međed peak. A 3.5km path around the lake is a perfect introduction to the park's beauty. In summer, Durmitor is a haven for hiking, mountaineering, and white-water rafting on the Tara River. In winter, the landscape transforms into a snowy wonderland, with Žabljak serving as the country's premier ski resort. A visit to Durmitor is an immersion into one of Europe's last truly wild and pristine natural environments.

  • The easy 3.5km walking trail around the Black Lake is a must-do and is suitable for all fitness levels.
  • For an adrenaline rush, book a white-water rafting or zip-lining experience in the Tara River Canyon, Europe's deepest canyon.
