Biljarda Hall (Njegoš Museum)

Biljarda Hall stands as a testament to the vision and personality of one of Montenegro's most celebrated leaders, Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. Built in 1838 to serve as his royal residence, its design is strikingly unique for a palace, resembling a medieval fortress with high stone walls and four defensive corner towers. This architectural choice was a practical necessity, reflecting the turbulent political climate of the era. The building earned its unusual nickname, "Biljarda," from the locals after Njegoš brought the first billiard table to Montenegro and placed it in the grandest room of his new home, a novelty that caused a great sensation. After Njegoš's death, the building served various state functions before being transformed into the Njegoš Museum, a key part of the National Museum of Montenegro. Today, a visit to Biljarda offers an intimate look into the world of the philosopher-king. Inside, you can see his personal library, original manuscripts of his epic poem "The Mountain Wreath," his private belongings, and, of course, the legendary billiard table itself. It is a place where statecraft, poetry, and history converge, providing invaluable insight into the man who laid the foundations of modern Montenegro.
