Suspended 900 meters high, the dazzling white building seems to sprout directly from a gigantic, vertical dark rock cliff. Ostrog is the spiritual heart of Montenegro.
The History and Legend of Saint Basil of Ostrog
To understand Ostrog, one must know the story of its founder, Saint Basil of Ostrog (Sveti Vasilije Ostroški). Born in the 17th century, he found refuge in the remote caves of the Ostroška Greda rock. Numerous miracles were attributed to him, and his holy relics remain in the monastery today, believed to have healing powers.
The Architecture: The Upper and Lower Monasteries
The complex is divided into two parts. The Lower Monastery is more conventional. The Upper Monastery is the iconic image, embedded in the rock, housing two small cave-churches where the relics of Saint Basil are kept.
