Welcome to Skadar Lake National Park, the liquid, beating heart of the Balkans. This place of serene beauty and lush nature offers a completely different side of the country.
Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića: The Gateways
There are two main gateways to explore the lake. Virpazar is the main tourist hub and the starting point for most boat trips. Rijeka Crnojevića is a quieter village, but it provides access to the famous Pavlova Strana viewpoint, with its spectacular horseshoe bend.
The true soul of Lake Skadar can only be felt from the water. Imagine gliding in a traditional wooden boat through narrow channels cutting through immense fields of water lilies. In many tours, there is a stop for a refreshing swim in the lake's waters.
Beyond the Boat: Other Activities
Birdwatching:
The lake is a paradise for enthusiasts, home to over 280 species, including the last colony of Dalmatian pelicans.
Wine Tasting and Gastronomy:
The surrounding region is one of the most important wine areas in Montenegro. Many local families own small wineries and welcome visitors for tastings of their Vranac wine and local products.
Practical Guide: Planning Your Visit
The best time to visit is late spring/early summer (May-June) when the lake is lush and the water lilies are in full bloom. We recommend dedicating a full day to combine a boat trip in the morning with a visit to a winery in the afternoon.
