Vlaska (Vlach) Church

The Vlach Church (Vlaška crkva) holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving building in Cetinje, with its foundations laid around 1450. Dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos, this modest Orthodox church is a powerful symbol of the city's long and resilient history. While its simple stone architecture is beautiful in its own right, the church is world-famous for its unique and extraordinary fence. Constructed in 1897, the fence surrounding the churchyard is made from the barrels of 1,550 captured Ottoman rifles from the victorious Montenegrin–Ottoman War of 1876–78. This feature stands as a potent and artistic monument to Montenegrin independence and martial prowess. The churchyard itself is a historic necropolis, containing the graves of many of Cetinje's founders and notable citizens, including some ancient "stećci" (medieval tombstones). Though small in stature compared to the nearby Cetinje Monastery, the Vlach Church is immense in historical significance. Its incredible fence alone makes it one of the most unique and memorable sights in all of Montenegro, offering a direct, tangible link to a pivotal moment in the nation's past.

  • The most unique feature is the church's fence – look closely and you will see it is made from the barrels of thousands of captured rifles.
  • Wander through the historic graveyard surrounding the church to see the tombs of many of Cetinje's most important historical figures.
