A mountain town for all seasons of adventure
Kolašin, nestled in the heart of Montenegro's wild north, is a mountain town that has come into its own as a year-round destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. While it may lack the ancient stones of the coast, its story is one of rugged natural beauty and a blossoming tourist industry that's transforming it into a hub for alpine life.
The town was founded by the Ottomans in the 17th century, and for centuries, it served as a key strategic point. But its destiny truly lies with the mountains that surround it—the majestic Bjelasica and Sinjajevina ranges. It's a place where the Morača and Tara rivers carve deep, dramatic canyons and where the air is scented with pine from one of Europe’s last remaining virgin forests.
Kolašin is the quintessential base camp for two of Montenegro’s most incredible natural treasures. To the east lies Biogradska Gora National Park, a UNESCO-protected area and a living time capsule. At its heart is the serene Biogradsko Lake, a glacial gem reflecting the ancient trees of the surrounding primeval forest. Walking the path around the lake is a journey into a world untouched by time, where 400-year-old trees stand as silent sentinels.
To the south, on the winding road toward Podgorica, is the historic Morača Monastery. Founded in 1252, this medieval spiritual center stands as a monument to Montenegrin faith and culture. Its ancient frescoes, preserved through centuries of conflict, tell powerful biblical stories, making it a sacred art gallery in the heart of the wilderness.
In winter, Kolašin’s story changes entirely. Its ski resort, now a combination of Kolašin 1450 and Kolašin 1600, comes alive with skiers and snowboarders enjoying its slopes. In summer, the same mountains become a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers, with trails leading to stunning peaks and secluded "katuns"—traditional shepherd huts. Kolašin is a destination that promises both peaceful tranquility and high-octane adventure, a truly modern mountain gem.
